Ras Al Khaimah Police announced the arrest of 51 beggars since the beginning of Ramadan as part of the campaign launched under the slogan ‘Fight begging and help those who truly need it’ by the Department of Information and Public Relations in co-operation with the Criminal Investigation Department. These included 34 male beggars and 17 female beggars.
Members of the society are keen on donating and giving charity during the Holy Month of Ramadan but this gives an opportunity for the weak-willed to engage in begging, the police said.
They urged the members of society wishing to give their alms to work with accredited charitable associations across the country to ensure that their donations reach those who deserve them including the poor and needy.
Ras Al Khaimah Police affirmed that the campaign aims to raise awareness among the public about the methods used by beggars who exploit the holy month of Ramadan to solicit sympathy and collect money from passersby.
They indicated that begging is a negative behaviour that is alien to society and harms the country’s civilized image, adding that this phenomenon is linked to behaviours and risks that threaten the safety of individuals such as theft and the exploitation of children and the sick to make gain.
Ras Al Khaimah Police called on members of society to co-operate with the security authorities in combating the phenomenon of begging, ignore beggars and report any cases of begging immediately by calling 901.
