Versatile actor leaves behind a powerful legacy

Val Kilmer, the magnetic and often enigmatic actor whose performances defined a generation of Hollywood cinema, has died at the age of 65, reported The New York Times.

Best known for his roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, and The Doors, Kilmer passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles due to complications from pneumonia, his daughter Mercedes confirmed to US media. Kilmer had previously battled throat cancer, diagnosed in 2014, which significantly affected his ability to speak after undergoing tracheotomy surgery.

Despite his illness, Kilmer made a poignant return to the big screen in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, reprising his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky alongside Tom Cruise. The moment was widely seen as a fitting tribute to a career that spanned decades and displayed his remarkable versatility as an actor.

A career of transformation

Born Val Edward Kilmer on December 31, 1959 in Los Angeles, Kilmer grew up in a Christian Scientist household, a faith he adhered to throughout his life. Demonstrating prodigious talent from an early age, he became the youngest-ever student to be accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School at the age of 17.

His early career was marked by a flair for comedy, with starring roles in 1984’s Top Secret! and 1985’s Real Genius. However, it was his turn as the cool, confident fighter pilot Iceman in 1986’s Top Gun that catapulted him to mainstream fame. The film became one of the defining blockbusters of the decade, and Kilmer’s performance opposite Cruise solidified his reputation as a leading man.

In the early 1990s, he proved his range with his portrayal of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991), a performance so immersive that surviving band members mistook his singing for Morrison’s own recordings. He went on to deliver compelling roles in the Western Tombstone (1993), where he played a hauntingly charismatic Doc Holliday, and Michael Mann’s Heat (1995), starring alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

Taking over the Batman mantle from Michael Keaton in Batman Forever (1995), Kilmer enjoyed commercial success, but his tenure as the Caped Crusader was short-lived, with George Clooney replacing him for the sequel. Other notable roles included the master of disguise in The Saint (1997) and a voice role as both God and Moses in the animated epic The Prince of Egypt (1998).

His later years were punctuated by projects of varying success, including The Island of Dr Moreau (1996), a film infamous for its troubled production, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), where he delivered a scene-stealing turn as a sharp-witted private detective.

Tributes pour in

Hollywood has paid tribute to Kilmer’s immense talent and enduring impact. Heat director Mann penned an emotional note on Instagram saying, “While working with Val on Heat, I always marvelled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character.

“After so many years of Val battling disease and maintaining his spirit, this is tremendously sad news,” he added.

Actor Josh Brolin shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, calling Kilmer “a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker.” James Woods lauded his performance as Doc Holliday as “what every actor dreams of achieving.”

Reflecting on his legacy, Will Kemp, who starred alongside Kilmer in the 2004 thriller Mindhunters, said: “So many great memories of working with him. He was fun, unpredictable, generous and overall very kind to me when I was very new to the job.”

A final act
