Gaza’s Water Becomes Toxic as Israel’s Assault Leaves Long-Term Damage
Gaza’s humanitarian crisis is deepening as experts warn that Gaza’s water has turned dangerously poisonous, adding an environmental disaster to the already catastrophic human toll of Israel’s genocide.
Months of relentless bombardment have leveled neighbourhoods, displaced families repeatedly, destroyed medical facilities, and now poisoned the very land and water Palestinians rely on for survival.
Even after a fragile ceasefire — one that Israel continues to violate daily — the scale of the environmental fallout is becoming increasingly undeniable.
A Community Reduced to a Toxic Wasteland
In Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, a once-bustling community is now an uninhabitable wasteland. Homes lie in ruins, while a key water source — originally a rainwater collection pond — has turned into a hazardous sewage-filled lagoon.
For thousands of displaced residents, this dangerous area has become both a shelter and a threat.
Umm Hisham, pregnant and displaced, described the unbearable conditions as she wades through foul, contaminated water with her children.
“We took refuge here with all the suffering you can imagine — mosquitoes, sewage, and the total destruction around us. All this threatens our lives and our children’s lives,” she told Al Jazeera.
Destroyed Infrastructure Leaves Water Rising — and Deadly
The pond was originally built to collect rainwater and direct it toward the sea. But after Israeli air attacks destroyed the pumps and crippled sanitation networks, raw sewage now floods into the basin unchecked. With electricity systems also shattered, contaminated water continues to rise rapidly.
Municipal officer Maher Salem warns the situation is catastrophic:
“Water levels have exceeded six metres with no protection. The fence is destroyed, and any child, woman, elderly person or even a car could fall into this pond.”
The area is now plagued with toxic odors, swarms of insects, and growing health risks, turning a once-functional water system into a deadly environmental trap.
A Toxic Aftermath With Long-Term Consequences
As Gaza struggles to survive under siege, the toxic water crisis highlights yet another layer of devastation caused by Israel’s military campaign. Beyond the immediate destruction, the environmental damage threatens long-term health, agricultural collapse, and contamination of vital water sources.
