Cars, Coffee, and Caffeine Crashes: UAE Doctors Warn Motorists on Road-Trip Risks

Dubai, UAE – For many drivers, a strong cup of coffee is the go-to fuel for long road trips. However, health experts in the UAE are cautioning motorists that over-reliance on caffeine can backfire, leading to “caffeine crashes” that impair alertness, focus, and reaction times behind the wheel.

“Caffeine is a stimulant that increases heart rate and blood pressure by constricting blood vessels and raising adrenaline levels – the body’s stress hormone,” said Dr. Jan Niclas Strickling, Specialist in Interventional Cardiology at Medcare Hospital, Al Safa. “Excessive intake may lead to palpitations, anxiety, jitteriness, or restlessness, all of which can affect concentration and calmness while driving.”

The Risks of Over-Reliance on Caffeine

While caffeine can temporarily mask fatigue, it does not eliminate it. Dr. Strickling warned that depending solely on coffee or energy drinks for alertness can be dangerous. “Over-reliance on caffeine increases the risk of impaired concentration, dehydration, and rebound fatigue once the stimulant effect wears off,” he explained. “Motorists should combine moderate caffeine use with regular rest breaks, hydration, and healthy meals.”

Understanding ‘Caffeine Crashes’

Frequent caffeine consumers, including long-haul drivers and delivery staff, are prone to what doctors call caffeine crashes – sudden energy dips, irritability, or headaches when caffeine levels drop. “These symptoms can negatively affect reaction time and focus,” Dr. Strickling noted, emphasizing that consistent, moderate intake is safer than binge consumption followed by withdrawal.

Dr. Bino Mary Chacko, Specialist Psychiatrist at Medeor Hospital, Abu Dhabi, added: “Excessive caffeine consumption can lead to driving errors and accidents. High doses cause over-arousal, delayed reaction times, and impaired judgment of speed or distance, all of which increase road traffic risks.”

Safe Caffeine Consumption

Experts agree that moderation is key. Dr. Chacko noted that up to four cups of brewed coffee – roughly 400 milligrams of caffeine per day – is generally safe. “Exceeding this limit can trigger anxiety, panic attacks, irritability, palpitations, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest. Overarousal and jitteriness interfere with the fine motor control needed for smooth steering and braking,” she said.

Expert Advice for Safe Driving

Both doctors emphasize combining caffeine with proper driving habits. “Avoid using caffeine to push through fatigue,” advised Dr. Strickling. “Ensure proper rest, stay hydrated, eat balanced meals, and plan regular breaks during long drives.”

By following these guidelines, motorists can enjoy the benefits of caffeine without compromising road safety.
