Matheus Cunha’s quick equalizer cancels out Brenden Aaronson’s opener in a tense 1-1 Yorkshire derby, leaving United outside the top four.
Manchester United needed a rapid response from Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha to escape Elland Road with a 1-1 draw against rivals Leeds United in a fiery Premier League encounter on Sunday.
Leeds, unbeaten in seven matches, took a shock lead in the 62nd minute through American midfielder Brenden Aaronson. He capitalized on a defensive lapse by young United center-back Ayden Heaven, racing onto a long ball before finishing calmly past goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The lead was short-lived. Just three minutes later, United substitute Joshua Zirkzee slid a precise pass into the path of Cunha, who prodded home from 12 yards to level the score. The goal was Cunha’s third in five games, offering a glimpse of form after a slow start to his United career following a summer move from Wolves.
The draw extends Leeds’ winless run against their historic rivals to eight matches, dating back to an FA Cup victory in 2010. For Manchester United, managed by Rubem Amorim, it was another frustrating result in a stuttering run of just one win in their last five league games. The single point leaves them in fifth place, missing a chance to break into the top four.
The match was played with typical derby intensity. Leeds flew into early tackles, but United crafted the better first-half chances. Benjamin Sesko and Diogo Dalot missed opportunities, while Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw a header strike the post.
Amorim reverted to his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, again without injured captain Bruno Fernandes. His late introduction of Zirkzee proved decisive for the equalizer, but United’s inability to find a winner—exemplified by a late Cunha effort that clipped the post—will raise further questions about their consistency.
For Daniel Farke’s Leeds, the point extends their impressive unbeaten run and moves them eight points clear of the relegation zone.
