City leaders demand ICE leave Minnesota amid rising tensions and protests over violent encounters with federal immigration agents.
For the second time in a week, a federal immigration agent has shot someone in Minneapolis, officials confirmed Wednesday, deepening community outrage and prompting renewed demands from city and state leaders for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to withdraw from the area.
The latest incident occurred Wednesday evening on the city’s north side. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said an ICE agent attempted a traffic stop and a struggle ensued with a male suspect outside a residence. During the altercation, the agent fired his weapon, striking the man in the leg. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, the agent was attempting to arrest “an illegal alien from Venezuela” when the individual resisted. The DHS claimed that during the struggle, two other people emerged from a nearby apartment and attacked the officer with a snow shovel and a broom handle, prompting the agent to fire “a defensive shot.”
The shooting ignited immediate protests at the scene, with some individuals reportedly throwing fireworks at officers. In response, the City of Minneapolis posted on social media platform X, acknowledging public anger and reiterating its demand “that ICE leave the city and the state immediately.”
This incident follows the fatal shooting of 37-year-old American woman Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent on January 7. Her death has sparked sustained protests against federal immigration operations in the city.
“This is not sustainable,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey told reporters. “We have ICE agents throughout our city and throughout our state who, along with Border Patrol, are creating chaos. This is not the path that we should be on right now in America.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also condemned the federal actions in a video statement Wednesday, criticizing “the chaos, disruption and trauma the federal government is raining down on our community,” and describing aggressive tactics by what he called “armed, masked, undertrained” ICE agents.
Authorities are urging calm as investigations into both shootings continue. The Minneapolis Police Department is assisting federal investigators in reviewing the latest use of force.
