Indian Embassy in Tehran presses Iranian authorities for contact with crew of MT Valiant Roar, arranges essential supplies amid prolonged detention since mid-December.
NEW DELHI – The Indian government is intensifying diplomatic efforts to secure consular access to 16 Indian crew members detained aboard the merchant vessel MT Valiant Roar by Iranian authorities, the Indian Embassy in Tehran confirmed on Saturday.
In a detailed statement, the embassy revealed it has been seeking access to the seafarers since first being informed of the vessel’s detention in mid-December 2025. Despite repeated formal requests and high-level interventions, including appeals from the Indian Ambassador, Iranian officials have yet to grant permission for consular meetings or for the crew to communicate with their families in India.
“The request for consular access has been reiterated numerous times since December 14, both through diplomatic correspondence and in-person meetings in Bandar Abbas and Tehran,” the embassy stated.
While awaiting access, Indian diplomats are working to ensure the crew’s basic welfare. After being alerted to depleting supplies, the mission successfully coordinated with the Iranian navy in early January to arrange emergency provisions of food and water for the ship. Efforts are also underway to ensure a steady supply of fuel.
Simultaneously, the Consulate of India in Dubai is engaging with the UAE-based company that owns the MT Valiant Roar, pressing it to fulfill its responsibilities. This includes ensuring continuous provisions and securing legal representation for the crew in Iranian courts, where the matter is expected to undergo judicial process.
“The Mission and the Consulate continue to press the Iranian authorities to grant early consular access to the crew and to ensure expeditious completion of the judicial proceedings,” the statement emphasized, underscoring the priority of the sailors’ well-being and a swift resolution.
The case highlights the complex diplomatic and humanitarian challenges that can arise in international maritime incidents, with India actively leveraging its diplomatic channels to support its citizens abroad.
