Attack on Brigadier General Hamdi Shukri’s convoy in Lahj governorate results in multiple casualties; coalition pledges support for Yemeni security forces.
RIYADH — The Saudi-led Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen has strongly condemned a deadly ambush on Wednesday targeting the convoy of a senior Yemeni military commander in the southern Lahj governorate.
The attack, which took place in the Jaoula area, struck vehicles under the command of Brigadier General Hamdi Shukri, head of the Second Division of the Giants Forces—a major Yemeni military unit aligned with the internationally recognized government. Preliminary reports indicate the assault resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries.
In an official statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki denounced the ambush as “a criminal act that is contrary to all human and moral values.” He emphasized that the coalition, which includes Saudi Arabia, will continue coordinating with Yemeni authorities to protect civilians and preserve stability in liberated regions.
Al-Maliki urged the public to cooperate with the Yemeni government and military “to confront any sabotage attempts or terrorist operations targeting the security and stability” of governorates under government control. He further affirmed the coalition’s commitment to “supporting Yemeni security efforts and pursuing those involved in the attack and bringing them to justice.”
The ambush underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of southern Yemen, even in areas recaptured from Houthi forces. The Giants Forces have been a key component of ground operations against the Houthis, and attacks on their leadership threaten to disrupt fragile military and political arrangements.
No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. The incident is likely to intensify scrutiny on security gaps and the persistent threat of insurgent-style attacks amid Yemen’s protracted conflict.
