Defense Ministry Confirms Fatality, Launches Investigation into Midnight Accident in Balikesir
ISTANBUL — A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed early Wednesday morning shortly after departing from its airbase, resulting in the death of its pilot, according to statements from the Ministry of National Defense reported by state media.
The aircraft took off from Balikesir province at 12:56 a.m. local time (2156 GMT Tuesday) when contact was suddenly lost. Anadolu Agency, citing the ministry, reported that radio contact and tracking data ceased immediately following departure.
Search and rescue teams were swiftly dispatched to the region and successfully located the wreckage. In an official statement, the ministry confirmed the fatality, saying, “Our pilot was martyred.”
Authorities have pledged a full investigation into the incident. “The cause of the accident will be determined following an investigation by the crash examination team,” the ministry added, extending condolences to the family of the deceased pilot.
This latest crash adds to a history of accidents involving the F-16 fleet, which is operated by several nations. The incident comes just months after Turkey grounded its C-130 cargo planes following a devastating crash in Georgia last November that claimed the lives of all 20 personnel on board.
