An Emirati entrepreneur Mohamed Alabbar, the founder of Noon, recently embarked on an intriguing venture by disguising himself as a delivery rider. This unconventional move allowed Mohamed Alabbar to gain first-hand experience of the inner workings of his company’s operations. Clad in the attire of a Minutes bike delivery rider, Mohamed Alabbar traversed the bustling streets of Downtown Dubai, immersing himself in the daily routines of his employees.
A captivating video documenting this unique experience was shared across Noon’s various social media platforms. Mohamed Alabbar along with renowned influencer Ayman tour a dark store – one of many situated across the UAE – to learn more about its innovative technologies and operations. This visit helped Alabbar familiarize with the innovative technologies and seamless operations that these fulfillment centres employ. These dark stores serve as fully-equipped hubs where incoming orders are meticulously processed and promptly delivered.
The concept of dark stores has gained traction among numerous companies in the UAE, facilitating swift grocery deliveries. It becomes feasible to transport groceries to customers in astonishingly short periods, sometimes as little as 10 minutes by confining delivery radius to immediate vicinity of these stores.
This efficient delivery model has been adopted not only by Noon but also by other prominent players in the market including Careem, Talabat, and Carrefour. As a result, customers can now enjoy the convenience of receiving their grocery orders within 60 minutes or less, further enhancing the overall shopping experience.
Optimising store layout
In 2021, Careem introduced their Quik delivery service for swift and efficient deliveries. The key to their quick delivery system lies in minimizing the time spent within stores. By optimizing store layouts and investing in advanced fulfillment and inventory management technologies, Careem has successfully reduced picking times and kept item replacement rates below 1% of all orders.
Chase Lario, the Global GM of Grocery at Careem, highlighted these efforts, emphasizing the significant reduction in preparation times and replacement rates for orders.
“The surge in demand for such services has been evident, with Careem experiencing a remarkable threefold increase in their customer base on a monthly basis since the launch of Quik delivery. As a response to this growing demand, Careem has expanded its operations by establishing more dark stores to meet customer needs,” Chase said.
Delivery companies have recognized that the quick delivery model effectively addresses various challenges, particularly the need for swift delivery of everyday essentials. With the continuous advancements in AI and other technologies, along with Dubai’s plans for vertiports, it is expected that quick deliveries will soon become the standard in the city. These innovations will further enhance the efficiency and speed of the delivery process, making it more convenient for customers to receive their essential items in a timely manner.
