In a distressing incident in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, a father has reportedly taken the life of his son due to their divergent political affiliations.
According to reports, the father was associated with the Awami National Party (ANP), while the son was a supporter of the former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Preliminary details indicate that the dispute erupted over the son, Atta-ur Rehman, allegedly disregarding parental advice. Enraged by the disagreement, the father, Noor-ur Rehman, resorted to violence, leading to the tragic death of his son.
The rift between the father and son escalated when Atta-ur Rehman displayed his allegiance to the PTI by hoisting the party flag at their residence in Badhber area near Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
This seemingly trivial act ignited anger in the father, leading to a heated confrontation. The situation took a tragic turn when, in a fit of rage, the father resorted to firing shots at his son.
According to police officials, the son sustained critical injuries in the gunfire, and despite immediate efforts for medical assistance, he succumbed to his wounds.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the dangerous consequences of political polarisation within families, they added.
The father, following the fatal shooting, managed to flee the scene before the law enforcement could apprehend him. The Peshawar police have initiated an investigation into the matter, with the motive identified as a political dispute within the family.
The deceased son recently returned from a foreign country on annual vacation, according to a media report.
