The Dubai Court of Appeal has upheld a verdict issued by the Criminal Court, sentencing a Khaleeji inmate to six months over attempting to cause chaos inside the cell in which he is serving his sentence.
The convict reportedly set fire to a blanket, with a shaver’s battery, before his plot was uncovered. The same court acquitted his brother, who is serving a sentence in the same cell on the charge of complicity in the crime.
The incident dates back to last June, when an inmate in the central prison attempted to do the aforementioned act, before it was detected by the cop in charge of guarding. The cop testified that on that day, the inmate asked to allow him to visit the clinic and that there was no apparent reason to let him visit the clinic, so the request was declined.
“He always makes trouble,” the cop told the Court.
Later on, the cop noticed slight smoke emanating from the cell, so he rushed and opened its door to find a small fire broken into the end of a blanket, the cop added. On questing the inmate and his brother who is serving a sentence in the same cell, they denied their connection to the act.
The cop and his fellows evacuated the place and transferred the inmates to another place.
On reviewing footage of the surveillance cameras, it was found that the convict had deliberately attempted to set fire in the blanket using sparks of a shaver’s battery, the cop added.
At the same time, the other accused denied his complicity in the crime, admitting that the convict attempted to make chaos after the cop had refused to allow him to visit the clinic.
The convict confessed to attempting to make chaos by causing a fire, after the cop in charge had refused his request to visit the clinic, noting that his brother had no connection to the crime.
The Court found him guilty, so it sentenced him to six months in jail. The jail term was also upheld by the Court of Appeal.
