Brushes, Compassion & Community: UAE Volunteers Revamp Sharjah School for a New Era

The national ‘7 Over 7’ initiative sees hundreds, including people of determination and youth, unite to refurbish a charity school, strengthening the nation’s fabric of giving.

SHARJAH: A charity school in Sharjah became the heart of a national volunteering movement this weekend as over 300 citizens and residents wielded paintbrushes, gardening tools, and cleaning supplies to transform its classrooms and grounds.

The massive renovation of Al Ahlia Charity Private School in Samnan was the first event in the ‘7 Over 7’ national initiative, organized by the Ministry of Community Empowerment and the Emirates Foundation. The project showcased a powerful cross-section of UAE society working in unison, from professionals to students and people of determination.

A National Mandate for Good

The ‘7 Over 7’ initiative is a cornerstone of the UAE’s Volunteering and Community Engagement Framework, designed to offer diverse opportunities across all seven emirates. Mohammed Abdulhamid AlHosani of the Emirates Foundation emphasized the unique spirit of giving in the UAE, stating that the program allows participants to choose projects that match their skills and passions, with new initiatives announced annually.

The Human Heart of the Initiative

The project was driven by personal stories of dedication. Awab Khattab directed traffic under the hot sun with a smile, while 16-year-old Noureddine Amasha, a person of determination, participated with enthusiasm despite physical challenges. “Volunteering is a wonderful experience,” he said. “Although this is my first time, I hope to have more opportunities.”

For young volunteers like Saeed Osama (11) and Ezzat Ahmed (13), the day was a conscious choice to do something meaningful. They traded their PlayStation controllers for scrub brushes, noting it was a “great opportunity to spend time together and do something useful.”

Building a Legacy of Care

Beyond a fresh coat of paint, the project embedded lessons in sustainability. Teachers introduced an award-winning organic composting system, turning the renovation into a practical workshop on environmental stewardship.

The collective effort ensured that students of Al Ahlia School, many from limited economic backgrounds, will return to a revitalized and inspiring learning environment—a tangible result of a community’s commitment to its own. As volunteer Dr. Wadad, a dentist, put it: “I want the children to feel joy when they return… I always try to leave a positive impact wherever I participate.”
