Authorities issue urgent reminder as regional tensions rise; residents warned not to photograph critical sites
SHARJAH – Dubai Police have issued a stern warning to residents: sharing false information or rumors online can now cost you a minimum of Dh200,000 in fines and potentially lead to imprisonment.
In a social media statement aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation amid heightened regional tensions, the force reminded the public that strict legal penalties apply to those who violate the UAE’s cybercrime laws.
“Sharing rumours, false information, or any content that contradicts official announcements or that may cause public panic or threaten public safety, order, or health is prohibited,” Dubai Police stated. “Violators may face criminal penalties, including imprisonment and fines of no less than Dh200,000.”
Protecting Critical Sites
The warning extends beyond just text-based misinformation. Authorities also cautioned residents against photographing or sharing images of sensitive locations.
“It may seem like just a photo… But to some, it’s information. Do not photograph or share security or critical sites. Protecting them is a national responsibility that helps keep our community safe and secure,” the police added.
The reminder comes as several UAE government entities have intensified efforts to combat the circulation of old videos and misleading images following recent geopolitical developments in the Gulf region.
What the Law Says
Under UAE law, residents are strictly prohibited from:
- Announcing, disseminating, or recirculating false news, data, or misleading rumors
- Sharing reports contrary to official announcements
- Broadcasting provocative advertisements that could incite public opinion
- Disturbing public peace or spreading terror among people
- Causing harm to the public interest, national economy, public order, or public health
Staying Safe Online
Authorities urge the public to rely exclusively on official government channels for accurate information during times of crisis. “At a time of crisis, it is crucial to stay calm, follow the guidance of the authorities and, most importantly, refrain from sharing false information which might create panic,” the police emphasized.
The public is encouraged to verify any suspicious or alarming content through official sources before sharing, as ignorance of the law is not considered a valid defense in cybercrime cases.
