FIFA issues heavy bans after misconduct in Qatar–UAE World Cup qualifier
FIFA has handed a 16-match suspension to UAE national team official Matar Al Suwaibani, along with a 10,000 Swiss franc fine, following incidents of unsporting behaviour and physical assault against the match referee during the UAE’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Qatar.
The heated match ended in a 2–1 victory for Qatar, securing the Gulf nation’s second-ever World Cup qualification.
In addition, Qatar’s Tarek Salman received a two-match suspension and a 5,000 Swiss franc fine after being sent off for dangerous play in the same fixture.
UAE to face Iraq in crucial playoff ties
Despite the disciplinary setback, the UAE squad is preparing for decisive playoff clashes against Iraq, with the first match scheduled in Abu Dhabi next Thursday, followed by the return leg in Basra on June 18. The winner will move on to the intercontinental playoff round for a chance to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
