Chaos on earth is an inevitable phenomena, and this reality is told by Quran (Sūrah al-Baqarah, verse 2:30) “when your Lord told the angels, “I will place a vicegerent on earth,” they said, “Will you put someone there who will produce chaos and shed blood, while we glorify, praise, and sanctify You?” He said, “I know things you do not know.”
Chaos is equivalent to uncertainty whose opposite is certainty (faith, Eeman, Yaqeen). New advances in science of Physics tell that entropy (which is measure of chaos, uncertainty) is getting produced continuously on this earth, and humans are the most potent generator of entropy (chaos). Humans have capacity to produce chaos not only in visible symmetries but also in invisible symmetries of thoughts.
Man induced chaos and disorder may take many forms like pollution, environmental degradation, turmoil, social chaos, cognitive chaos corruptions, and tyrannies. Quran tells the same thing (Sorah ar-Rum, Verse 30:41) “Corruption and disorder have appeared on land and in the sea because of what the hands of people have (done and) earned (of evil deeds). Thus He causes them to taste the consequence of some of what they have done, so that they may (take heed, repent and reform, and so) return (to the right way)”
Allah orders for a struggle for good order in Quran (Surah al-Imran verse 3:104) “And from among you there must be a party who invite people to all that is good and enjoin the doing of all that is right and forbid the doing of all that is wrong. It is they who will attain true success.” Fight for good order, and fight against chaos and agents of chaos starts with instilling a belief (faith, certainty, negentropy) at cognitive level, and then it expresses into material based struggling actions of various difficulty levels.
Struggle against agents of chaos (devils) is the duty of every Muslim and Momin (Muslim with firm faith). This struggle of “amr–bil–maroof-wa-nahi–anil–munkar” for which Allah has ordered is always coupled with pain, agony and sufferings. The degree of difficulty level a faithful can embrace during struggle demonstrates the degree of faith/Eeman on Allah Almighty.
It should be remembered that it’s not the success level achieved during struggle but the difficulty level encountered which is an indicator of faith/Eeman. It does not require high calculations to understand that difficulty level is ultimate when chances of worldly success are bleak, death of the whole family including infants is impending, and when opponents are from their own ranks, huge in number, and seemingly invincible.
In human history the most difficult struggle of “amr–bil–maroof-wa-nahi–anil–munkar” has been waged by one person, and he is Hussain ibn Ali (A.S). In words of famous historian Gibbon (Edward Gibbon, 1737-1794) “…..feat of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the brave grandson of the Prophet of Islam Muhammad (PBUH), has for centuries amazed the greatest minds of the whole world with his unprecedented sacrifice and heroism. You do not need to be a Muslim to believe in the sincerity and purity of the intentions with which the Imam gave his life in an unequal battle with the oppressors….”
The struggle of ultimate difficulty level wherein a person fights for “amr–bil–maroof-wa-nahi–anil–munkar” at the expense of everything he/she possesses, and is not deterred by concerns for family, defeat, death and destruction is called Hussainiat. Hussainiat is not only the last degree of sacrifice, worship to one Allah (Tauheed), and denial to all gods but also the ultimate degree of success. For a Muslim and Momin success is measured according to difficulties levels encountered during process of effort. The results of efforts have little relevance in divine schemes about humanity.
A true Hussaini is a Momin Muslim who is fights against evils and devils when they are rampant, innumerable, mighty and not distinguishable easily. Hussainiat is the last fall back defense strategy available to Muslims and righteous humans. In words of Charles Dickens “The principles of Hussein’s revolution have become close to each rebel, who is eager to regain his rights from his oppressors.” (Charles Dickens, 1812-1870. English writer, novelist and essayist).
In current situation when Muslim Ummah and humanity is facing so many powerful, innumerable and seemingly invincible agents of chaos the reincarnation of Hussainiat in form of true Hussaini Muslims is required for salvation of oppressed, enlightenment of derailed, and renewal of order out of chaos.
Dr Shakir Ahmad Shahid, Ph.D, PSP, is a Postdoct Fulbright Alumnus in Forensic Science and Criminology, who has served in various fields like Policing, Investigation, Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism on policy and operational levels as a Senior Police Officer and Director (counter terrorism).
