The phased transition to the Ministry of Education’s unified schedule aims to streamline the academic year across the Emirates, with schools preparing comprehensive plans to ensure a smooth shift for students and parents.
ABU DHABI: Indian curriculum schools in the UAE will officially transition to the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) unified academic calendar starting in April 2026, aligning their traditional April-March cycle with the national framework.
The decision, which was not implemented this year as schools had already begun their sessions, marks a significant shift for one of the largest educational sectors in the country. Principals have confirmed they are now developing structured transition plans to adjust curriculum pacing, assessments, and communications for the 2026-27 academic year.
Currently, while most international schools close for a month-long winter break in December, many Asian curriculum schools continue classes to fulfill their home-country board examination requirements. The unified calendar is designed to create a standardized academic year across all schools in the UAE.
Preparing for a Seamless Transition
School leaders are emphasizing careful planning to maintain academic rigor and minimize disruption.
Seema Umar, Principal of Dewvale School in Dubai, stated that her school is preparing a “structured transition plan that adjusts curriculum pacing, assessment timelines and operational routines… without compromising academic requirements.” She highlighted “open communication and shared understanding among all stakeholders” as key to success, with plans for orientation sessions and detailed FAQs for parents.
Echoing this sentiment, Anita Singh, Principal of Global Indian International School (GIIS) Dubai, outlined a “three-pronged effort” focused on protecting the student academic experience and wellbeing. “We will adjust routines only where necessary so that the impact is not large scale,” she said, ensuring timetables and internal assessments remain aligned with board requirements through rescheduled mock exams and revision plans.
No Immediate Change for Current Students
For now, the current academic cycle remains unchanged. Nargish Khambatta, Principal of GEMS Modern Academy, clarified that “the unified calendar does not apply to Indian curriculum schools until April 2026 and hence does not impact our schools currently.”
She confirmed that December remains a critical month for board-exam preparation and that schools will continue to operate on their established schedule, ensuring the full 182 instructional days are met. Preparations for the 2026 implementation, she assured, “will be carefully planned for in April 2026.”
