Mandatory flu vaccination for UAE residents going for Umrah and Hajj from March 26

To safeguard the health and safety of pilgrims, their families and all members of society from infectious diseases, it is crucial to take all required doses of vaccinations, especially the flu vaccine.
Additionally, it is important to follow all guidelines and precautions before travelling to perform Umrah and Hajj.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) asserts the significance of these measures and is committed to ensuring their implementation.
As of March 26, 2024, flu vaccination cards will be mandatory for Umrah and Hajj travellers. The Ministry strongly advises visiting a health centre in advance of departure, particularly for those with chronic illnesses.
Both government and private health centres offer vaccinations. This measure is part of the Ministry’s comprehensive strategy to prevent and manage the spread of infectious and communicable diseases.
To ensure maximum effectiveness and sufficient immunity for prevention, it is recommended to take vaccinations at least ten days prior to travelling.
Those with chronic diseases should consult a doctor to ensure their health condition is stable and they are able to perform Hajj and Umrah.
Additionally, it is important to take all necessary and recommended vaccinations, as well as a sufficient amount of medication, and engage in regular exercise.
Individuals who have received the flu vaccine within the past year do not need to get another one. The approved vaccination card can be obtained through the Alhosn app before travelling and presented at the country’s ports.
Dr Hussein Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary of Public Health Sector, affirms that the Ministry is prioritizing the health and safety of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, especially those with chronic diseases, the elderly, pregnant and lactating women. In line with this commitment, the flu vaccination will now be incorporated with the other mandatory vaccinations.
State institutions coordinating the affairs of pilgrims work together to ensure their health and safety during Hajj and Umrah. This includes protecting them and society from potential health risks, particularly infectious and chronic diseases.
Hussain Al Rand pointed out that the launch of a campaign to vaccinate pilgrims against influenza, in accordance with the national immunisation policy.
The policy serves as a robust national framework for combating infectious diseases, including seasonal influenza, with the aim of reducing their impact on individuals and society.
Improving the health system’s response to respiratory diseases and strengthening surveillance mechanisms will contribute to meeting international standards for vaccination coverage.
