DUBAI – In a spectacular display of power hitting, the Mumbai Cobras defeated the Arabia Wolves 13-6 on Thursday, powered by a historic eight-RBI performance from Caleb McNeely. The victory solidifies the Cobras’ strong position in Baseball United’s inaugural season with a record of four wins and one loss.
McNeely was the undeniable star of the game, delivering two decisive blows. In the sixth inning, he cleared the bases with a grand slam. Then, in the eighth, he sealed the victory with a two-run homer while the “Money Ball” was in play—a league innovation that doubles runs batted in on a single play—bringing his total run production to eight.
Helmig and McNeely Form Lethal Duo
McNeely was not alone in his offensive explosion. Teammate Lou Helmig set the stage earlier by hitting a four-run homer in the third inning, also with the Money Ball active. Together, the two sluggers were responsible for 12 of the Cobras’ 13 runs, overwhelming the Wolves’ pitching staff.
The win was credited to relief pitcher Akshay More, who delivered a solid 3.2-inning performance, allowing just one earned run and striking out three batters to steady the game for Mumbai.
League’s Signature Rules Take Center Stage
The game served as a showcase for Baseball United’s unique rule innovations, which were pivotal throughout the contest. For the first time in league history, both the “Money Ball” and the “Fire Ball” were called during the same critical at-bat.
The “Fire Ball” rule, which automatically ends an inning if a pitcher records a strikeout, was executed brilliantly by the Cobras’ Karan Patel. With the bases loaded and only one out, Patel struck out Arabia’s Jacob Teter, the first overall draft pick, to snuff out a promising offensive threat from the Wolves.
The loss was assigned to Wolves’ pitcher Blake Purnell, who surrendered five earned runs. For Arabia, Taylor Darden provided a silver lining, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
