Creators the Duffer Brothers confirm a “fresh and new” story with different characters and mythology, set to explore lingering mysteries.
Following the monumental finale of Stranger Things, the gates to the Upside Down are not closed for good. Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have officially confirmed a spin-off is in active development, promising to expand the beloved universe with a “clean slate.”
In an interview with Variety, the brothers revealed plans to begin work immediately, building an entirely new corner of the Stranger Things world. “It’s very fresh and very new,” said Ross Duffer, emphasizing the project will feature “completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology.”
While the spin-off will maintain a connective thread to the original series, fans should not expect a direct continuation of the Hawkins saga. Matt Duffer clarified that the show will address lingering mysteries, including the origins of the sinister Mind Flayer, but within a distinct framework.
“I do want to explain… The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it. But it’s a completely different mythology,” Matt stated. “It’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that… but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining.”
The announcement comes on the heels of the series’ two-part fifth season finale, which concluded the global phenomenon after nearly a decade. The final episode, released on December 31 and also shown in theaters, became the series’ longest at over two hours.
The Duffer Brothers’ confirmation ends years of speculation and positions the untitled project as the next major chapter in Netflix’s flagship supernatural franchise. The focus now shifts from Hawkins’ heroes to an unknown new threat, ensuring the cultural impact of Stranger Things will extend far beyond its original small-town setting.
