Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Marzouq Khalfan Al Naqbi, Head of the Traffic and Patrols Department at the Sharjah Police General Command, revealed that periodic campaigns are being conducted to seize motorcycles violating traffic laws in the emirate.
These campaigns have resulted in the seizure of approximately 6,000 violating motorcycles per month, as part of efforts to preserve the safety of road users and curb bad behavior.
He emphasized, during an interview on the “Direct Line” program, that the campaigns target all types of motorcycles that do not comply with the laws, particularly those locally known as “bu sheraa,” as well as bicycles and electric motorcycles used in places other than those designated for them. He pointed out that these motorcycles do not meet traffic safety requirements, posing a danger to their users and other road users. He added that their use constitutes a violation of the traffic law, and therefore ongoing campaigns are being conducted to seize and confiscate them, in cooperation with the relevant authorities. Dedicated Lanes
Al Naqbi explained that, based on the keen interest of Major General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, coordination is underway with the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority to designate bicycle lanes. This step will enhance traffic safety and promote a culture of sustainable transportation in the Emirate of Sharjah. The aim is to reduce bicycle-related accidents, especially given the increasing use of bicycles by various segments of society. This will also clearly regulate bicycle traffic, making it easier for security authorities to monitor compliance with laws.
He pointed out that there are currently designated bicycle lanes in several areas, including the area surrounding the Sea of Al Heera, some parks, and Maliha Street. These lanes encourage adherence to the proper use of bicycles, especially in light of the police’s educational and guidance campaigns. He emphasized that the goal of the campaigns is not only to apprehend violators, but also to protect lives and property and enhance traffic safety on the roads. Joint Cooperation
Al Naqbi stated that the police work in constant coordination with relevant companies and authorities, including Bee’ah, regarding seized bicycles. These bicycles are handed over to the company, which in turn handles recycling operations to ensure they are not returned to the market or resold, thus preventing their further illegal use.
These measures are part of a comprehensive plan developed by Sharjah Police in cooperation with relevant authorities to provide a safe and organized traffic environment, especially in light of the increasing use of bicycles of various types, both for transportation and recreation.
