Miller & Stubbs Fire Proteas to Record Total in Ahmedabad Thrashing
South Africa, the 2024 runners-up, launched their 2026 T20 World Cup campaign with a powerful 57-run victory over Canada in Sharjah on Monday. The Proteas set the tournament’s highest total so far, posting 213-4, before their pace attack dismantled the Canadian reply.
After being asked to field first, Canada watched South Africa’s batters accelerate fiercely, plundering 47 runs from the final three overs. A blistering, unbroken 75-run partnership between David Miller (39* off 23) and Tristan Stubbs (34* off 19) propelled the Proteas past the 210-mark.
Match Highlights
Openers Quinton de Kock (25) and captain Aiden Markram set a solid foundation with a 70-run stand. Markram’s aggressive 59 off 28 balls, featuring 10 fours and a six, laid the groundwork for the late assault. Canadian left-arm wrist-spinner Ansh Patel provided brief resistance, taking 3-31, including the wickets of Markram, Ryan Rickelton (33), and Dewald Brevis.
In reply, Canada faltered early against South Africa’s pace. Lungi Ngidi’s four-wicket haul (4-31) left the Canadian top order in tatters at 45-4 within the powerplay. Only opener Navneet Dhaliwal offered sustained fight, scoring 64 before falling in the final over as Canada finished at 156-8.
Key Player Reactions
Player of the Match Lungi Ngidi credited the evening dew for aiding his variations. “It did have a bit of an impact… The slow balls were still holding up a little bit,” Ngidi said. “We knew our attack brings pace, but for me, the variations are always the ones that catch people out.”
Looking Ahead
The victory positions South Africa strongly in their group as they seek to go one better than their 2024 final appearance. Canada, despite the loss, showed flashes of promise, particularly through Patel’s spin and Dhaliwal’s batting, as they look to regroup for their upcoming matches.
