Sri Lanka: Supreme Court Overturns Dissolution Of Parliament By President

Colombo: In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court in Sri Lanka has overturned President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to sack parliament and declared his decision to call snap polls was illegal.

The top court said on Thursday that Sirisena cannot sack the 225-member House before four-and-a-half years have passed since its election.

The ruling deals a severe blow to Sirisena, who plunged the South Asian country into constitutional crisis when he sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on October 26 and replaced him with Mahinda Rajapaksa, a controversial former president.
