Military intercepts most drones in pre-dawn assault; incident marks latest escalation along strategic frontier amid widening regional conflict.
DAMASCUS — Syria’s military reported Monday that a large-scale drone attack struck several of its army bases near the border with Iraq, vowing to respond decisively to what it described as an act of aggression.
In a statement released by the Syrian army, officials said the attack occurred “at dawn today,” describing it as “a large-scale attack by a number of drones targeting several army bases near the Iraqi border.”
Most of the incoming drones were intercepted, the military said, without disclosing whether the assault resulted in casualties or material damage.
Damascus Warns of Retaliation
The army emphasized that it is currently evaluating its options in the aftermath of the attack.
“We are studying our options and will respond appropriately to neutralize any threat and prevent any aggression against Syrian territory,” the statement read.
The statement did not identify the perpetrators, and no group has yet claimed responsibility for the drone assault.
Escalation Along Volatile Frontier
Monday’s attack marks the latest in a series of cross-border incidents along the Syria-Iraq frontier since the outbreak of the broader Middle East war. The border region has long been a flashpoint, hosting a complex web of Iranian-backed militias, US military positions, and ongoing counterterrorism operations.
The drone strike comes amid heightened regional tensions following the US-Israel-Iran military conflict, which has already reverberated across global energy markets and contributed to fuel supply disruptions in multiple countries.
Analysts view the incident as a potential sign of further spillover from the wider conflict into Syrian territory, raising concerns about the possibility of retaliatory strikes and deeper entanglement of regional actors.
