Recently the story of a Rolex watch valued at over $50,000 garnered international media attention, surpassing that of its wearer, US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
“What do you wear when visiting one of the world’s most notorious prisons?” was the headline that appeared on the top page of the New York Times.
The newspaper went on in a mocking manner: “If you’re Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who on Wednesday visited a hazardous terrorist detention facility in El Salvador, the answer is: a baseball cap with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) logo, gray pants, and a long-sleeved white shirt.
“Oh, and let’s not forget the gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, which sells for about $50,000.”
After cameras captured the former South Dakota governor sporting a pricey Rolex watch in a promotional video inside a detention facility in El Salvador, the secretary is currently the subject of an internal probe investigating her spending, according to a report by Washington Post.
Wearing a $50,000 Rolex watch, the secretary staged a publicity stunt inside an infamous El Salvadorian prison called “Puppy Killer Barbie.”
Widespread controversy was also raised by her spending during Donald Trump’s presidential campaign; according to a startling investigation, taxpayers may have paid over $2 million for her personal and political activities.
Trump selected Kristi Noem, the first female chief of the Department of Homeland Security, because he appreciated her firm control over border security in her state.
