The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) of the UAE has revealed that people who want to secure a virtual work residency visa in the country won’t have to be physically present in the UAE during the visa application process.
This new development offers more flexibility for individuals who want to work remotely from the UAE without a sponsor, as they can now complete their visa application from wherever they are located.
The virtual work residency visa has a validity of one year and can be extended based on the terms and conditions of the visa.
Remote working visa in the UAE
The UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has introduced a new virtual work residence visa for individuals who wish to work remotely in the UAE. The visa application process can be completed from anywhere in the world and does not require physical presence in the UAE.
Applicants can submit their application through the website or the UAEICP smart application. Once the entry permit is issued, the applicant must enter the UAE within 60 days and complete the procedures for the residence visa. To be eligible, applicants must have a passport with a validity of six months, a recent photo, health insurance covering their stay in the UAE, and a proof of employment with a contract validity of one year and a minimum monthly salary of $3,500 or equivalent.
In addition, applicants must also provide their previous month’s salary slip and bank statements for the last three months. The entry permit will be sent to the registered email of the applicant. The fee for the virtual work program is AED350 per person.
If the requirements are not met or the application is returned due to incomplete information or documents, it will be declined electronically 30 days after being returned to the applicant. If this happens three times, the application will be automatically declined.
In case of a declined application, the fee and financial guarantees are refundable through the credit card within six months from the date of application or by cheque or bank transfer to banks located within the UAE within 5 years.
Remote working in the UAE
The trend of remote work and working from home saw a significant increase following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. Companies were forced to quickly adapt to this new mode of work and discovered numerous benefits, including reduced office space requirements, improved work-life balance, and greater flexibility. The rise of communication tools like video conferencing and instant messaging has played a critical role in making remote work possible.
There has also been a shift in company policies and a reconsideration of traditional work norms, with more businesses offering flexible work arrangements and embracing the idea of a remote workforce. This benefits both employees and companies, as it allows for a wider pool of top talent to be attracted and retained.
However, there are also concerns about the long-term impact of remote work on the economy and job market, such as a decrease in demand for office space leading to a decline in the commercial real estate market. But offices in the UAE have now resumed on-site work following the implementation of safety protocols and vaccination programs.
In December 2022, Airbnb launched the Dubai remote working hub in collaboration with the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, providing resources and information on entry requirements and visa policies for those interested in living and working in the emirate. Velma Corcoran, Airbnb’s regional lead for Middle East & Africa, stated that Dubai is a leader in facilitating remote work and wants to make it easier for people to work and travel while also harnessing the economic benefits of this new type of tourism.
Remote work has also created new job opportunities, as companies can now hire employees from anywhere in the world. While remote work and working from home come with their own set of advantages and challenges, it is clear that the trend is likely to continue, and companies must find ways to adapt and embrace this new mode of work. Remote work has already had a profound impact on the way we live and work, whether it leads to a permanent shift in the job market or is just a temporary change.
