Travel agents report surging demand for both periods, with European Christmas fares up to 90% higher than short-haul National Day breaks, according to a Khaleej Times analysis.
For UAE residents planning a year-end escape, the choice of holiday could make a massive difference to their budget, with Christmas travel emerging as significantly more expensive than getaways during the National Day break, a new analysis reveals.
A comparison of current airfares and package deals shows a sharp price divide, driven by high demand for long-haul “white Christmas” destinations and family travel during the extended school break.
The Price Gap in Focus
Data from Skyscanner, analysed by Khaleej Times, illustrates the stark contrast:
- Dubai to Helsinki: A flight in late November costs around Dh2,198, but soars to Dh4,000 during Christmas week.
- Dubai to London: Fares jump from Dh3,032 to Dh3,900.
- Dubai to India (Kochi): One of the steepest increases, with prices surging 90% from Dh1,340 to Dh2,545.
“National Day holidays are all about short, spontaneous breaks,” said Mir Wasim Raja, manager at Galadari International Travel. “Christmas bookings started early this year because school holidays are fixed. Families with children plan their leaves around that time.”
Why Christmas Costs More
Travel industry executives pinpoint key reasons for the price surge in December:
- Longer, Fixed Holidays: The Christmas break aligns with school closures, prompting more families to book extended, long-haul trips.
- Premium Destinations: High demand for European and Scandinavian winter destinations pushes prices up.
- Advanced Planning: Christmas trips are often booked months in advance, locking in capacity and driving up last-minute prices.
Where to Find Value
While Christmas is generally costlier, some deals remain. A flight to Baku, for instance, is cheaper in December (Dh1,211) than during National Day (Dh1,950).
For the best value on a short break, agents recommend visa-free destinations like Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Thailand during the National Day period. Packages to these locations are currently more affordable and plentiful.
Booking Tip: “Book now, before the National Day dates are officially declared,” advised Raja. “Once the announcement is made, remaining seats may vanish and prices will climb.”
The bottom line for travellers: opt for a National Day break for cheaper, short-haul trips, but be prepared for a premium if a traditional Christmas holiday is on the wish list.
