The University of the Arts Sharjah will unify visual and performing arts disciplines under one institution, following a major restructuring of higher education in the emirate.
SHARJAH — In a significant move to consolidate arts education, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, announced on Monday the establishment of the University of the Arts Sharjah.
The announcement was made during a meeting of the Sharjah Council of Higher Education and Scientific Research, chaired by the Ruler. The new university aims to unify higher education in the arts by bringing diverse disciplines together to enhance teaching, learning, and creative development.
Sheikh Dr. Sultan appointed his daughter, Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, a prominent figure in the regional and international art scene, as the President of the nascent institution. As part of the restructuring, the Board of Trustees of the existing Sharjah Performing Arts Academy will be dissolved and reconstituted under the new university, with Sheikha Hoor serving as its Chairperson.
The leadership team for the university’s core academies has also been named. Dr. Peter Barlow has been appointed Director of the Academy of Performing Arts, while Dr. Nadia Mahdi Al Hassni will take the helm as Director of the Academy of Visual Arts.
The establishment of the University of the Arts Sharjah marks a strategic step in centralizing and elevating the emirate’s commitment to arts education, further solidifying its position as a cultural hub in the region.
