Apple Selects Google’s Gemini to Power Next-Generation Siri in Major AI Alliance

Multi-year deal expands Apple-Google partnership, positioning Gemini at the core of Apple’s AI features while shifting OpenAI to a secondary role.

In a strategic move that reshapes the AI landscape, Apple has finalized a multi-year agreement to integrate Google’s Gemini AI models into its revamped Siri assistant, set to debut later this year. The partnership signals a significant win for Google’s parent company, Alphabet, strengthening its position in the competitive race against OpenAI.

Announced on Monday, the deal grants Google access to Apple’s vast ecosystem of over two billion active devices—a massive expansion of Gemini’s reach. Google already supplies AI technology for Samsung’s Galaxy AI, but the Apple integration represents one of the most influential AI deployments to date.

“After careful evaluation, Apple determined Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models,” Google stated, noting that Gemini will also support upcoming Apple Intelligence capabilities.

The agreement reinforces the long-standing partnership between the two tech giants, which already includes Google’s role as the default search engine on Apple devices—a deal worth billions annually to Apple. Following the news, Alphabet’s market valuation surpassed $4 trillion, reflecting investor confidence in its AI strategy.

Apple’s decision follows months of evaluation, during which the company also engaged with OpenAI. Last year, Apple integrated ChatGPT into iOS, allowing Siri to handle complex queries via OpenAI’s chatbot. That feature will remain, but Gemini will now serve as the primary AI engine for Siri’s core functions.

“Apple’s decision shifts OpenAI into a more supporting role,” said Parth Talsania, CEO of Equisights Research. “ChatGPT will remain for opt-in, advanced queries, while Gemini becomes the default intelligence layer.”

For Apple, the partnership accelerates its AI roadmap after earlier delays and lukewarm receptions to its initial generative AI tools. Google, meanwhile, gains ground against OpenAI, which has held an early lead in the consumer AI space. Reports last year indicated OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a “code red” following the release of Gemini 3, urging teams to speed development.

Privacy concerns were addressed in the announcement, with Google emphasizing that “Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”
