Rezūm Water Vapour Therapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses the natural energy stored in water vapour, or steam, to remove excess prostate tissue that is pressing on the urethra.
As a revolutionary treatment, Rezum uses the natural energy stored in water vapour to remove excess tissue that is pressing on the urethra. For most men, the procedure eliminates the need for medications or surgery and eliminates the side effects.
Enlarged prostate symptoms
An enlarged prostate, also referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common occurrence in men over 45 and is now treated in a number of ways. If not treated, BPH may lead to urinary tract infections, bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones or incontinence.
If you are a man over the age of 45, you may be familiar with some of the symptoms: increased frequency in urination, slowed or delayed start of the urinary stream or inability to urinate, dribbling at the end of urinating, and incomplete emptying of your bladder.
Meet the expert: Prof. Dr. Khizar Hayat Gondal
If you are experiencing these symptoms, Prof. Dr. Khizar Hayat Gondal, who has specialization in Endoscopic & Laproscopic Urology, is an ideal specialist for consultation and treatment.
In DubaiNews.tv exclusive, Prof. Dr. Khizar Hayat Gondal, who is also the leading surgeon for Rezum procedure, shared some insights into the procedure. Here are the excerpts from the interview;
What is Rezūm?
Prof. Dr. Khizar Hayat Gondal says that Rezūm is a new minimally-invasive treatment for BPH that relieves lower urinary tract symptoms. We perform this under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic.
When is Rezūm needed?
He says that Rezūm is one of a range of treatments for BPH that relieve the symptoms rather than necessarily stopping the growth of prostate. Rezūm cannot stop the growth of the prostate, but because it avoids any damage to the surrounding tissue hence doctors can repeat in the future if there is need for it.
Dr. Gondal adds that Rezūm can be a good option if the patient wants to avoid a more invasive treatment that could result in damage to their sexual function, or if they want to avoid the side effects of medication.
Rezūm System relieves the symptoms of obstruction and prostate tissue associated with BPH and is indicated for men with prostatic urethra lengths >2 .0 cm and prostate volumes >20 cm3. Rezūm System also treats prostates with a median lobe or elevated central zone tissue.
What does Rezūm involve?
Prof. Dr. Khizar Hayat Gondal says that Rezūm involves delivering a targeted shot of water vapour to the affected tissue in the prostate. The water disperses through the tissue, releasing heat. This heat then causes the cells to die. The body gradually reabsorbs treated tissue and while the space around the prostate opens up.
This system consists of a portable radio frequency generator and delivery device that is introduced into the body via the urethra (transurethral approach) and guided by direct visualization through a telescopic lens placed within the delivery device.
Radio frequency energy from the generator is applied to an inductive coil in the delivery device to heat up a controlled amount of water outside of the body, converting the water into vapour or steam.
Doctors use a tiny needle with emitter holes to deliver thermal energy from outside the body into the prostate tissue through to ablate targeted obstructive prostate tissue that causes BPH. The procedure takes approximately 3 – 7 minutes and can be performed in a Day Surgery setting. No RF energy is delivered into the body.
Saline (salty water) run throughout insertion of device and during treatment to help ensure better views and to prevent the urethra from overheating.
The number of steam injections required depends on the size of the prostate, but in all cases the treatment is very quick.
Advantages
Prof. Dr. Khizar Hayat Gondal says that Rezūm is proven to significantly improve BPH symptoms including urinary frequency, urgency, weak stream, straining to urinate, and nocturia (frequent night-time urination) while preserving erectile function and urinary continence. It has a particular advantage for people who have some issues with anesthesia like cardiac problems they can be operated on. For those patients who are young and want to preserve their fertility and potency, this procedure is ideal for them
We all know that men want to stay away from anything related to medicine. We do not like going to the doctor and we certainly do not like taking medications. Rezum Therapy gives you the opportunity to have a strong steady stream without having to take your prostate medications. After you recover from your Rezum therapy, you have a very high likelihood that your doctor will take you off those medications.
We believe Rezum is a great solution for the treatment of urinary symptoms secondary to an enlarged prostate. If you suffer from obstructive urinary symptoms, are tired of taking medications, or are having complications from an enlarged prostate, you can reach out to Dr. Gondal, who will be happy to help improve your quality of life.
Are risks involved?
Prof. Dr. Khizar Hayat Gondal says that Rezūm is a safe procedure with a very low level of risk. Around 4% of patients report an adverse effect on ejaculation.
Recovery
He says that Rezūm is a day case procedure, so it is normal for the patient to go home on the same day. While the patient returns to complete normal activities within a few days.
