Micky Jagtiani, a prominent figure in the business landscape of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Gulf, has passed away. He was the founder of the Landmark Group. Micky Jagtiani dedicated decades to building a multi-billion corporate empire, spanning multiple markets in the region, the subcontinent, and beyond.

Under Micky’s leadership, Landmark Group flourished, encompassing influential brands such as max, babyshop, Splash, and homecentre. Starting in the Gulf markets, the network expanded throughout the region and even reached India. Forbes estimated his wealth as over $5 billion, but his legacy extended far beyond monetary achievements. Landmark Group played a vital role as a significant job creator in the Middle East.

Micky Jagtiani, aged 70, leaves behind a profound impact on the business world. He will be remembered for his remarkable contributions to the growth and success of Landmark Group.

The Micky formula

Landmark Group, known for its pioneering spirit among family-owned businesses in the Gulf, always aimed for more than just dominance in a single market. Instead, Micky Jagtiani, along with his wife Renuka, adopted a formula of venturing into new markets at the earliest opportunity, and not just with one brand.

Renuka Jagtiani has in recent years been helming the continued growth narrative of Landmark.

While many other companies focused on a handful of brands and hoped for their growth, Landmark took a bold approach by extending existing brands and adding new ones. This forward-thinking strategy set them apart and made Landmark exceptional in the industry.

Micky Jagtiani was instrumental in driving this vision, constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation and expansion. His dynamic leadership and entrepreneurial spirit were key factors in Landmark’s success and reputation as a trailblazer in the business world.

Art of delegating

Micky Jagtiani, known for his vast wealth in the Middle East and beyond, possessed another notable strength: his ability to delegate responsibilities. This approach allowed each brand and division within his business empire to chart its own path to success, benefitting from operational flexibility.

Ishwar Chugani, Managing Director of Giordano Middle East, shared his experience of knowing Micky since relocating to Dubai in the early 1990s. They frequently conversed and met while engaging in “Management By Walking Around” in the malls. Chugani regarded Micky as a visionary leader, mentor, and dear friend.

Ishwar Chugani
“Micky carried a pen and notepad and took notes. My fondest memory of him was bumping into him in Düsseldorf and we both decided to have a dinner,” said Chugani.

When reflecting on what he learned from Micky, Chugani emphasized the value of humility—an important trait that Micky exemplified throughout his leadership journey.

“He was a visionary leader, mentor, and dear friend.”

And what did Chugani learn from Micky? ‘Humility…’

A near 50,000 strong group

Landmark’s workforce numbers are around the 48,000 mark, affirming its status as one of the biggest employers in these markets. Multiple HR industry sources have in the past spoken about the low staff turnover rates the group has had through the years, especially at the senior executive levels.

“Micky was a trailblazer in so many ways – but in a region that is dominated by family-run businesses, his professionalism was an example for all of us. And set a precedent for how family businesses can scale professionally,” said Ashish Panjabi, COO at Jacky’s Electronics.

The ‘details’ man

Micky Jagtiani, known for his hands-on approach, was often seen at malls, immersing himself in the atmosphere to gauge consumer sentiments firsthand. He would find a preferred spot at one of the food and beverage outlets, armed with a pen and notepad, paying meticulous attention to detail. This habit exemplified his commitment to understanding the market and valuing the people he collaborated with.

Micky was a pioneer in many respects, shaping a culture that fostered innovation, original brand creation, an unmatched retail infrastructure, and a dedicated community of Landmark employees and customers. Despite having brands like babyshop and homecentre in the Landmark portfolio, the group embraced e-commerce early on, venturing into the online realm. However, their true success lies in their mastery of the omnichannel approach, capitalizing on the physical presence of their brands to create hybrid experiences.

Landmark also recognized the significance of a robust supply chain, evident in their state-of-the-art logistics hub located in Jebel Ali Free Zone. This facility became operational shortly before the pandemic struck and proved invaluable during the subsequent disruptions in supply caused by Covid-19.

Micky Jagtiani’s visionary leadership extended far beyond business strategies. His hands-on involvement, emphasis on detail, and commitment to innovation played crucial roles in the growth and resilience of Landmark Group. His forward-thinking approach continues to shape the organization and its ability to adapt to the evolving market landscape.

Originally from India, Jagtiani started the business in 1973 with one store in Bahrain, which later grew across the Middle East, Africa, and India.

That was a quintessential Landmark – being ahead of its times. A legacy of Micky Jagtiani…
