Hamas and Islamic Jihad say remains found in northern Gaza will be examined via Red Cross-facilitated transfer, in a move that may impact ongoing conflict dynamics.
GAZA CITY – Officials from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad militant group said on Wednesday that they had recovered remains believed to be those of an Israeli hostage in the northern Gaza Strip and would transfer a sample to Israel for forensic examination.
A Hamas official told AFP that a team from the armed wings of both groups located the remains under rubble in the Beit Lahia area. The sample will be handed over to Israeli authorities through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for identification.
An Islamic Jihad official confirmed the same information, marking a rare coordinated communication between the two factions regarding a potential hostage case.
The development comes amid ongoing conflict and indirect negotiations regarding hostages still held in Gaza since the October 7 attacks. If confirmed, the recovery could have significant emotional and political repercussions in Israel, where the fate of remaining captives remains a national priority.
