The IDF says it is targeting terrorist infrastructure in response to “repeated violations,” as regional tensions escalate amid US military build-up.
Jerusalem: Israel’s military announced it was carrying out strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon on Saturday, marking the latest flare-up in the fragile truce between the two foes.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the Israeli army said: “In response to Hezbollah’s repeated violations of the ceasefire understandings, the IDF is striking Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon.”
A Fragile Truce Under Strain
Israel and the Iran-backed militant group agreed to a ceasefire in November 2024, bringing a temporary halt to a year of intense cross-border warfare. However, since the truce took effect, Israel has conducted regular strikes inside Lebanon, maintaining that it is acting to enforce the ceasefire provisions and prevent Hezbollah from rearming and regrouping near the border.
Both Hezbollah officials and the Lebanese government have consistently condemned the ongoing Israeli operations, labeling them as clear violations of the agreed-upon truce.
Geopolitical Tensions Run High
The latest military action comes against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical activity. This week, Iran and the United States—Israel’s key ally—held talks in Geneva. During these discussions, US President Donald Trump is reportedly pushing for Tehran to agree to significant concessions regarding its nuclear program.
Simultaneously, the Pentagon has ordered the most substantial military build-up in the Middle East in decades. The world’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is currently approaching the coast of Israel, signaling a formidable American presence in the region as tensions continue to simmer on multiple fronts.
