Mexico’s President Makes Diplomatic Plea: Send BTS More Often
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

President Claudia Sheinbaum personally asks South Korea’s leader to arrange more K-pop tours after tickets sell out in minutes, highlighting Mexico’s booming cultural demand.

In an unusual diplomatic move, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has directly appealed to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to send global K-pop sensation BTS to Mexico more frequently, after tickets for the group’s upcoming concerts sold out within minutes.

The plea comes as hundreds of thousands of Mexican fans, known as the “BTS Army,” expressed disappointment over being unable to secure tickets for the three scheduled shows in Mexico City this May. Only about 150,000 tickets were available, despite nearly a million young people attempting to purchase them, according to Sheinbaum.

“The excitement is immense, but so is the frustration for those who couldn’t get tickets,” President Sheinbaum told reporters on Monday. “That’s why I’ve written to President Lee Jae Myung, asking that these acclaimed K-pop artists visit Mexico more often.”

The sold-out tickets underscore Mexico’s growing passion for South Korean culture—from K-dramas and food to music—a trend the Mexican government has actively embraced. Earlier, Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, a noted BTS fan, posted a TikTok video greeting band member Jin after the tour was announced.

Sheinbaum also revealed she contacted the event promoter, Ocesa, to explore adding more concert dates, but was told it was not feasible.

BTS is set to embark on a massive world tour starting in April, their first since completing mandatory military service in South Korea. The group will release a new album in March before performing across 34 cities worldwide.

While fan frenzy for BTS is global, Mexico is the first country where ticket scarcity has prompted presidential intervention—blending pop culture appeal with diplomatic outreach.
