Hala Shahin’s innovative use of AI and play-based learning transforms math education and puts UAE on the global educational map.
A mathematics teacher from Sharjah has been selected as a top 50 finalist for the prestigious $1 million Global Teacher Prize 2026, spotlighting the UAE’s advancements in educational innovation.
Hala Shahin, who teaches at Khawla Bint Tha’albaa School, earned her place among the elite educators from over 5,000 nominations across 139 countries. Recognized for her pioneering work in integrating artificial intelligence and smart learning into the curriculum, Shahin has played a key role in reshaping how mathematics is taught both in the UAE and the wider Arab region.
“Teachers shape minds, spark confidence, and open the doors through which young people create brighter futures,” said Sunny Varkey, Founder of the Global Teacher Prize and GEMS Education.
Transforming Math Through Technology and Play
Shahin’s approach moves beyond traditional instruction. She has developed AI-based assessment tools and a play-based teaching methodology designed to make mathematics more accessible and enjoyable. Her original frameworks, such as ‘Guiding Young Talents’ and the ‘Treasures of Mathematics’ resources, have supported students with disabilities and contributed to a rise in top scores.
Her commitment extends beyond numbers. Through initiatives like the ‘Khawla Sustainability Competition’ and a student-led Red Crescent team, she connects mathematical concepts to climate education, practical skills, and community volunteering.
A Three-Decade Mission Inspired by a Teacher
With a career spanning nearly 30 years, Shahin’s passion for teaching was ignited at age 14 by an inspiring math educator. A Microsoft Certified Trainer and multiple award-winner, she began her profession in Egypt before bringing her expertise to the UAE. She continually blends her classroom experience with advanced studies in school leadership and AI to mentor a new generation of students and fellow teachers.
The Global Teacher Prize, now in its tenth year, highlights the critical role of educators worldwide. Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, emphasized the need to support teachers: “If we are to build a just, inclusive and sustainable future… we cannot rise to this moment unless we invest in teachers.”
The list of finalists will soon be reduced to a top 10, with the ultimate winner chosen by the Global Teacher Prize Academy and announced at the World Governments Summit in Dubai in February 2026.
