As the nation prepares to mark Flag Day on November 3, here are the essential rules and protocols for respectfully hoisting the UAE flag.
The UAE will once again be draped in its iconic colours of red, green, white, and black on November 3 as the nation celebrates Flag Day. This annual tradition sees public and private institutions, along with residents across the emirates, hoist the flag to honour a powerful symbol of unity, pride, and the nation’s founding values.
The occasion commemorates the historic moment in 1971 when the UAE’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, first raised the flag. The design, selected from over 1,030 entries in a competition, was created by Abdullah Al Ma’enah, who was just 19 years old at the time.
The Dos and Don’ts of Hoisting the UAE Flag
To ensure the flag is treated with the utmost respect, authorities have outlined specific protocols. Adhering to these guidelines is not only a matter of national pride but also a legal requirement.
What You SHOULD Do:
- Quality and Material: Ensure the flag is made from high-quality, durable material, such as a polyester blend.
- Proper Positioning: Hoist the flag so it never touches the ground and remains at least 20-25 cm away from the base of the pole.
- Maintain Pristine Condition: The flag should always be clean, neatly ironed, and free from damage, fading, or tears.
- Solemn Folding: After any official use or occasion, the flag must be folded properly and stored with respect.
What You MUST Avoid:
- No Disrespect: Never drop, destroy, tear, or lower the flag in a manner that shows disrespect. Insulting the UAE flag is a crime under Federal Law, punishable by imprisonment of up to 25 years and a fine of Dh500,000.
- No Additions: Do not place any emblems, logos, or decorative edges on the flag. The only exception is the official Presidential Flag.
- Not for Consumption: The flag must not be used on any edibles, such as cakes or sweets.
- No Alterations: Do not change the proportions, size, or shape of the flag for decorative items like balloons or logos.
The Symbolism Behind the Colours
Each colour of the UAE flag carries a deep, historical significance:
- Red: Symbolises the bravery, courage, and sacrifices of past generations.
- Green: Represents growth, prosperity, and cultural development.
- White: Stands for peace, goodness, and charitable contributions.
- Black: Reflects the strength and power of the nation, and its rejection of injustice and extremism.
By observing these guidelines, residents and institutions can participate in UAE Flag Day in a manner that truly honours the spirit and legacy of the nation.
