Pro-Iran armed groups may target central Baghdad, embassy says, urging American citizens to leave the country immediately
BAGHDAD – The United States embassy in Baghdad issued an urgent security alert on Thursday, warning that pro-Iran armed groups in Iraq may launch attacks in the capital within the next 24 to 48 hours.
“Iraqi terrorist militia groups aligned with Iran may intend to conduct attacks in central Baghdad in the next 24-48 hours,” the embassy said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The embassy reiterated its call for American citizens currently in Iraq to leave the country immediately, citing the heightened threat of violence.
No further details were provided regarding the nature or specific targets of the potential attacks. The warning comes amid heightened regional tensions linked to the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict.
The US embassy has previously issued similar security alerts urging Americans to depart Iraq, as Iranian-aligned militia groups have frequently claimed responsibility for rocket and drone attacks against US diplomatic and military facilities in the region.
