In the heart of the Potohar region, specifically in Gujar Khan, Rawalpindi, an artist has emerged whose life story intertwines tradition, inspiration, and remarkable talent. Renowned for his versatility, this artist has excelled in various creative fields, including painting, sketching, sculpting, poetry, writing, and production. His journey, enriched by diverse cultural experiences and a fervent passion for artistic expression, has garnered him numerous accolades, national awards, and a cherished place in the hearts of audiences around the globe.
Ahmad Habib’s deep roots in Gujar Khan have significantly shaped his artistic journey, which began at a young age. His father, Muhammad Munir Akhtar, a celebrated poet known for his Potohari poetry, played a pivotal role in his life. Growing up amidst poetic verses and the vibrant Potohari culture, Ahmad developed a profound appreciation for language and expression. The impact of his father’s words was profound, laying a strong foundation for his own creative pursuits.
As a young man, he moved to Oman with his family, where he spent his formative years. Oman, with its rich history and multicultural tapestry, offered him a new lens through which to view the world. During his time there, he began exploring the visual arts, taking up sketching and painting to express his connection to his homeland. The combination of his father’s poetic influence and the vibrant environment of Oman became the dual source of inspiration that propelled him into his career as a multifaceted artist.
During his time in Oman, Ahmad developed his talents in painting, sketching, and sculpting, discovering a deep passion for working with charcoal. This medium became his favorite, enabling him to express complex emotions, capture vivid expressions, and depict landscapes with a striking, monochromatic richness. The bold contrasts and raw texture of charcoal resonated with the traditional, rustic themes he brought from Potohar, filled with depth and character. His charcoal artworks quickly gained recognition for their emotional impact, with each stroke reflecting his connection to his roots and his father’s poetry.
Not confining himself to flat art, he also excelled in sculpture. His pieces often showcased the cultural and traditional aspects of his homeland, admired for their lifelike quality and meticulous detail. Each sculpture told a story, as if the essence of Potohar was etched into the shapes he created. His works found a special place in exhibitions, representing the strength and beauty of his heritage. Following in his father’s footsteps, he ventured into poetry, channeling his heritage into verses that spoke to the collective memory of his people. His poetry, though personal, carried a universal appeal, touching on themes of nostalgia, identity, and the changing tides of time. Writing became a natural progression of his poetic expressions, leading him to author books and essays that showcased his philosophical musings, life reflections, and love for the arts.
As a producer, he played a significant role in shaping the media landscape by creating and directing projects that honored the cultural heritage of his homeland. His productions highlighted the Potohari language, stories, and aesthetics, giving prominence to the unique cultural narratives of his region. By taking on the dual role of producer and artist, he was able to connect traditional and contemporary storytelling, making folklore culture more relatable and appreciated.
His talent and commitment have garnered him numerous national awards across different fields. His exhibitions have taken place not only in Pakistan but around the world, captivating audiences with his striking charcoal artworks and moving sculptures. Each exhibit narrates a story, as he uses his art to illuminate the traditions, resilience, and beauty of the region.
His journey from Gujar Khan to Oman and back to Pakistan’s art scene reflects a life devoted to exploration and cultural preservation. His legacy as a painter, sculptor, poet, writer, and producer stands as a tribute to the power of heritage and artistic expression. His story continues to inspire young artists from Potohar and beyond, encouraging them to embrace their roots and create from a place of authenticity.
Ahmad’s life beautifully illustrates the blend of cultural heritage and personal passion. From the verses of Urdu poetry to the delicate strokes of charcoal, he has captured the richness of his background in various artistic expressions. His journey serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling—whether through words, images, or sculptures—and highlights the significance of preserving our cultural legacy through art. In his hands, the spirit of Gujar Khan and Potohar endures, creating a legacy that will inspire and resonate with audiences for years to come.
Currently, Ahmad Habib is immersed in writing his autobiography, a project that promises to reflect his unique artistic vision. Staying true to his diverse approach, he plans to introduce a fresh style to autobiographical writing, allowing his narrative to unfold not just through text but also through the artistry and perspective he embodies. The autobiography aims to be visually striking and poetic, inviting readers to experience his life as if they were wandering through one of his exhibitions or admiring his sketches and sculptures.
His method showcases his artistic background, merging traditional storytelling with visual elements, abstract reflections, and vivid imagery. Each chapter is set to encapsulate the essence of a different medium he has mastered—be it the rich, textured quality of charcoal or the three-dimensional allure of his sculptures. Instead of a straightforward timeline, the autobiography will intertwine his experiences, inspirations, and philosophies, presenting them as a cohesive piece of art.
Readers can look forward to this work being more than just a sequence of events; it will provide an immersive glimpse into his journey, identity, and the culture he has celebrated through his varied creative endeavors. This innovative approach emphasizes his belief that life, much like art, is most impactful when it transcends traditional boundaries, inviting readers into a into a realm of visual and literary poetry that only a true artist can conjure.
