Melania Trump Premieres White House Documentary, Aiming to Shape Legacy as First Lady

Film Produced by AmazonMGM Offers a Glimpse Into the Private First Lady’s 20-Day Transition Back to Washington, Amid Ethical and Public Opinion Scrutiny

WASHINGTON — First Lady Melania Trump premiered a documentary film about her life to a star-studded political crowd Thursday night at the Kennedy Center, offering a carefully curated look into her private world just days before her husband’s 2025 presidential inauguration.

The film, titled “Melania,” is set for a global theatrical release Friday, followed by streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The project has drawn attention not only for its subject — the famously private first lady — but also for its reported $40 million budget and financial arrangements while the Trumps are in the White House.

In brief remarks at the premiere, Melania Trump described the documentary as a window into her dual roles as a public figure and a private citizen.

“I want to show the audience my life, what it takes to be a first lady again and the transition from private citizen back to the White House,” she told reporters, adding that the film is “beautiful, emotional, fashionable, cinematic, and I’m very proud of it.”

President Donald Trump, who viewed the film privately over the weekend, praised it Thursday as restoring a sense of “glamor” he said the country needs.

The documentary covers the 20-day period leading up to Inauguration Day 2025, showing Melania Trump managing her business ventures, philanthropic work, family life, and White House team assembly. In one teaser clip, she turns to the camera before walking into the Capitol and says, “Here we go again.”

Unprecedented Undertaking Raises Questions
The project marks what historians call an unprecedented move for a sitting first lady, particularly one receiving compensation. While exact financial terms have not been disclosed, Melania Trump’s senior adviser Marc Beckman defended the arrangement, noting she was a private citizen when AmazonMGM Studios acquired the project and receives no salary as first lady.

“Why should we limit her?” Beckman asked.

Katherine Jellison, professor emerita of history at Ohio University, noted the break from tradition: “As far as I know, she’s the first first lady to be paid a lot of money to have a documentary made about her.”

The film also marks a commercial partnership between the Trumps and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, whose relationship with the president has thawed in recent years.

Shaping a Public Persona
Polls suggest Melania Trump remains an enigmatic figure to much of the American public. A CNN survey from January 2025 found about 4 in 10 adults had no opinion or hadn’t heard enough about her, while roughly 3 in 10 viewed her favorably and a similar share unfavorably. Among Republicans, about 7 in 10 viewed her favorably.

“I think it’s an attempt to really refine her image for the American public,” said Katherine Sibley, a history professor at Saint Joseph’s University. “She’s a mystery to the American people.”

First-Year Focus on Children’s Issues
Apart from the film, Melania Trump has focused her first year back as first lady on child welfare. She successfully lobbied for the “Take It Down Act,” which criminalizes nonconsensual sharing of intimate images, and launched the “Fostering the Future” program to support children in foster care.

She also intervened diplomatically, writing to Russian President Vladimir Putin to help reunite Ukrainian children separated by the war — an effort that she says led to eight family reunifications.

Looking ahead, the first lady hinted at new legislative efforts for 2026 during a recent White House Christmas reception, though details remain undisclosed.

“Melania” is directed by Brett Ratner, whose return to filmmaking follows past allegations of sexual misconduct, which his lawyer has denied. Ratner downplayed box-office expectations, telling reporters, “You can’t expect a documentary to play in theaters.”

Yet for Melania Trump, the film appears to be less about commercial success and more about controlling the narrative of a life lived largely away from the spotlight.
